Yahoo has announced plans to shut down its search engine, effective April 2, 2020.
The company said in a statement that it made the decision to " focus on our core products and services " and that it will " be working with Microsoft to transition our existing search agreement ."
Yahoo's search engine has been powered by Microsoft's Bing since 2009, and Microsoft will continue to power Yahoo Search after the shutdown.
Yahoo Search will be redirected to Microsoft's Bing search engine, and users will still be able to access their search history and settings.
This is not the first time Yahoo has shuttered a product: In 2016, the company closed its video site, Yahoo Screen, and in 2017, it killed off its live-streaming app, Yahoo Live.
Yahoo's decision to shut down its search engine comes as the company is in the midst of a major turnaround effort under new CEO Marissa Mayer.
The company has been selling off non-core assets, including its Tumblr social networking site, and has been focused on growing its core businesses, such as email, news, and finance.
Mayer has also been investing in artificial intelligence and machine learning, which she believes will be critical to Yahoo's future success.
The shutdown of Yahoo Search is not expected to have a major impact on the company's bottom line, but it is a symbolic move that signals Yahoo's renewed focus on its core products and services.
